BIKING WITH LUSI

I introduced Lusi to the idea of biking when she was five months old. She was extremely fit at this time having had the summer months to enjoy long active walks every day. Still, I did not want her to overexert herself.

The first few try outs on the bike were not a great success despite the fact that we had spent several sessions just walking around the back yard with the bike so that she got used to the strange contraption. I had Lusi on a lead at first and lured her along with treats but she had a tendency to pull ahead on the lead wanting to go faster! This of course de-stabilised me on the bike and made it difficult to control where we were going.

After a few such try outs we decided to take her off-leash on the cross country trails where we usually walk, at a gentle speed. My husband accompanied us on foot, partly to make sure that I did not fall off the bike! This she loved. She tucked herself in quite closely to me and was really quite good at staying in position.

Biking is considered a great way for introducing the idea of running at axle for carriage driving because the dog has to learn respect for the wheel but at the same time must learn to stay in position. It then becomes a way to subsequently build endurance.
